WOMAN RECEIVES NEW JAW MADE
BY 3D PPRINTER
In a medical first, an 83-year-old
Belgian woman has received a new
lower jaw created by a 3D printer.

The custom implant was made from
titanium powder that was heated and
fused a layer at a time by a special
laser printer. Built by LayerWise, the
man-made jaw features “articulated
joints, cavities to promote muscle
attachment and grooves to direct the
regrowth of nerves and veins.

It used a laser beam to melt
successive thin layers of titanium
powder together to build the part. “This
was repeated with each cross section
melted to the previous layer.

It took 33 layers to build 1mm of
height, so you can imagine, there were
many thousand  of layers necessary to
build this jawbone.

The unidentified patient, whose own
jaw was being destroyed by a bone
infection, amazed doctors by speaking
soon after waking from the anesthesia
and by chewing and swallowing
normally a day after the June
operation. Jules Poukens led the
operation at the Biomedical Research
Institute at the University of Hasselt.

A GEL TO REPLACE FILLING WORK
IN DENTISTRY
A gel that can help decayed teeth grow
back in just weeks may mean an end
to fillings.

The gel, which is being developed by
scientists in France, works by
prompting cells in teeth to start
multiplying. They then form healthy
new tooth tissue that gradually
replaces what has been lost to decay.

Researchers say in lab studies it took
just four weeks to restore teeth back to
their original healthy state. The gel
contains melanocyte-stimulating
hormone, or MSH.
Decay is caused by bacteria, called
streptococcus mutans, that live in the
mouth and feed on sugar in the diet.
Once the bacteria stick to the enamel,
they trigger a process called
demineralisation - they turn sugar in
the diet into a harmful acid that starts
to create holes in the teeth.

For decades, the main treatment for
cavities has been to 'drill and fill'.
However, an estimated one in five
Britons suffers from dental phobia, a
fear of dentists which means some
would rather endure pain and suffering
than face the prospect of having their
teeth drilled.

The new treatment is painless. And
although fillings halt decay, they can
come loose and sometimes need
refilling.

Experts believe new tooth cells would
be stronger and a permanent solution.

NUCALM INDUCES RELAXATION IN
DENTISTRY PATIENTS
NuCalm   induces a state of deep
relaxation even in highly anxious
patients.
Using a system known as cranial
electrotherapy stimulation (CES),
NuCalm consists of a generator and a
headset that transmits relaxing
electrical and sound frequencies to the
brain.
Alpha brain waves are associated with
relaxation, meditation, and idleness. A
patient with brain waves in the alpha
range is unable to be anxious. NuCalm
entrains the brain to the alpha range,
naturally creating homeostasis,
neuromuscular release, and relaxation.

NANOFILM WILL  BRING BACK DEAD
TEETH TO LIFE
In years past, teeth with diseased or
injured pulps were removed. More
recently, root canal treatment has
allowed dentists to remove the
damaged pulp and retain the tooth.

Regenerative endodontics, the
development and delivery of tissues to
replace diseased or damaged dental
pulp, has the potential to provide a
revolutionary alternative to pulp
removal.

Scientists have combined a substance
called alpha melanocyte stimulating
hormone (or alpha-MSH), which has
anti-inflammatory properties, with a
widely-used polymer to produce a
material that fights inflammation in cells
in dental pulp. Nano-films containing
alpha-MSH could help revitalize
damaged teeth, and even reduce the
need for a root canal procedure.

The scientists are reporting
development of a multilayered, nano-
sized film - only 1/50,000th the
thickness of a human hair - containing
a substance that could help
regenerate dental pulp. Previous
studies show that the substance,
called alpha melanocyte stimulating
hormone, or alpha-MSH, has anti-
inflammatory properties. The scientists
showed in laboratory tests alpha-MSH
combined with a widely-used polymer
produced a material that fights
inflammation in dental pulp fibroblasts.
Fibroblasts are the main type of cell
found in dental pulp. Nano-films
containing alpha-MSH also increased
the number of these cells. This could
help revitalize damaged teeth and
reduce the need for a root canal
procedure.

U  TEXAS  TRIAL TESTING STEM
CELLS IN DENTISTRY
Millions of teeth are saved each year
by root canal therapy. Although
current treatment modalities offer high
levels of success for many conditions,
an ideal form of therapy might consist
of regenerative approaches in which
diseased or necrotic pulp tissues are
removed and replaced with healthy
pulp tissue in order to revitalize teeth.
They will collect small (~4X4mm)
pieces of oral mucosa that are
normally removed during surgical tooth
extractions, isolate human postnatal
progenitor/stem cells and, using an in
vitro cell culture system, combined
isolated cells with various scaffolds
and test compounds to determine
optimal conditions to differentiate pulp-
like tissue (eg, odontoblasts,
fibroblasts, endothelium, etc) grown in
segments of human roots.

HIGH TECH EQUIPMENT PRODUCES
DENTAL FILLING ON THE SPOT
Cerec procedure by Sirona Dental
Systems: instead of putting in a
temporary filling, the dentist
photographs the cavity using a 3D
camera, improves  the image on a
screen to refine the shape and
then mill the required filling
immediately – in the next room, using
an industrial-diamond-tipped,
computer-driven tool.
There is a direct correlation between
sophisticated technology and customer
satisfaction. Just a few figures will
prove this point. Over the past 20
years, more than 15 million CEREC
restorations have been created and
placed worldwide – to the complete
satisfaction of patients and dentists.
After five years, 95–97 percent of all
CEREC crowns were still intact. The
survival rate of inlays and onlays was
90–95 percent after ten years.
